To maximize the effectiveness of plantar fasciitis taping, feet should be cleaned with a non-moisturizing soap and should be thoroughly dry.
Step 1 – wrap tape around the front of the foot (around the metatarsals).
Step 2 – wrap a strip of tape around the heel of the foot. Start on the outside of the heel and wrap the tape around the back of the heel, finishing on the inside of the heel.
Step 3 – starting from the outside of the front of the foot (near the little toe), wrap a long strip of tape diagonally over the top of the foot, round the heel from the inside-out and then back diagonally over the top of the foot finishing at the inside of the front of the foot (near the big toe). This should make an X shape across the mid-foot and gives support to heel of the foot.
Step 4 – repeat Step 3 three times to create a strong support.
Step 5 – Apply a strip of tape horizontally across the front of the foot to cover the ends of the strips applied in previous Steps.
When finished, the bottom (plantar fascia) of the foot should be almost entirely covered from the front of the foot to the heel.
The tape should be regularly replaced and patients should ensure that the skin is given adequate time to breathe between tapings.
How Effective is Plantar Fasciitis Taping?
The success of plantar fasciitis taping varies depending on the severity of the plantar fasciitis. Taping is best used in conjunction with other treatment methods as it is unlikely to completely cure the condition on its own once developed.
