Product Description
The Alimed D2 Night Splint is designed to maximize patient compliance with its hinged dorsal shell and dynamic stretch cord. Most night splints fail because they force the foot into a 90ยบ position and expect the patient to tolerate this aggressive stretch for the entire night. The new D2 Night Splint? overcomes this major source of patient noncompliance by allowing the patient to start with a more gradual stretch and progress as her condition improves. I purchased this night splint along with the A-Force Dorsal night splint to compare them. I have Plantar Fasciitis and cannot tolerate sleeping in the big boot that my Pod gave me. The idea- to have a splint that was comfortable and adjustable was a laudable one. I just think the makers didn’t think it through or test the product. As you can see, unlike the others this boot is molded more to the front of the long than the back which allows more airflow to the rest of the leg, especially at night. But there are a few problems, to begin with it needs a wrap at the bottom, just above the ankle to secure the splint to the leg so that the splint can’t move out and away from the leg when the foot angle is increased. Also, the adjustable piece at the bottom should completely surround the foot and offer more toe-box space than the wrap does when secured to the other side of the splint by velcro. When I tightened the wrap it would cause my toes to squeeze together uncomfortably and led to my taking it off in the middle of the night. It got so bad that the edge of the splint near my foot, bit into the side of my foot near my big toe and I developed a blister. Also, the lining on the inside of the splint is made of some terry-cloth like material and tends to overheat the body as well, they should try for some memory foam or a breathable mesh. But, in general, if I leave the foot wrap looser, my foot is barely in a neutral position unless I lie on my back (and the weight of the covers cause me to point my toes) or stretch my foot to get away from the hot inner lining. The cloth underneath the splint that holds your foot before it’s secured by the wrap isn’t strong to keep you foot from bending, hence a more rigid and open toe-box. Otherwise, with a few fixes, this would be THE night splint to sleep in. The product arrived promptly and offers a return/exchange policy from the merchant.
